If the marriage is a legal one here, then why is the claim that the woman can only go to these councils when we have a legal system that can deal with the issue ?

Or are they just voluntarily staffed by Muslim elders etc?

sandyr, indeed, but one wonders why they are needed, any of them. If the women are married in the eyes of Sharia, they are not married here legally, in the way that one marries in a church, registry office. So any divorce has to be within that court, is that right?

Many of us have warned of this for a long time but the hand-wringers, many on this site, refuse to listen and brand us racist or some other slur.

Whilst trying to observe others' cultures we are in danger of letting our own slip away. We need to get a tight grip. Our laws and practices or leave. And take your hand wringing sympathizers with you (not that they would last long as ironically most of these religions actually hate right-on lefties)

young, not sure that is much help, however if the women are married in the eyes of the sharia, then one assumes that they have to resolve the issue of divorce. If the women are married in a church then that would seem to be an easier option, but this isn't the case...
