My Compressor Is Making A Funny Noise.

I don't know if I'm in the right section but I have a compressor in my garage that I use for light spraying and pumping up my car tyres. The last time I switched it on it pumped until it reached pressure then when it switched off but a lot of air seemed to escape from the controlling bits on the top. This just continues until it runs out but it does not re-switch itself on again. Any ideas?
