Dumped Vehicle

The apartment block I iive in has garages and an off street parking area. Several months ago a vehicle (Irish number plates, tax and insurance out of date) was abandoned in front of one of the garages, restricting access. We have made enquiries as to how to get it removed. The police say it is the council's responsibility not theirs, the council say they can do nothing as it is off road. We contacted a firm about moving it on to the road, but they didn't want to know.

It seems unreasonable that a vehicle can be dumped on someone else's property and there is nothing that can be done about it. Does anyone know of a way round this? Any legal route open to us?

Push it out on to the road and then report it has untaxed and uninsured.

I reported a car outside my house that wasn't taxed. Within 24 hours it had a giant green warning sticker on it that gave the owners a certain amount of time to shift it. The minute that period was over the car was duly towed away.

The council are not being entirely truthful. They are duty bound to remove vehicles in their AREA, as long as costs are not unreasonable (i.e in remote areas or where specialist removal equipment is required, which wouldn't seem to be the case).

Thanks for the replies. I will start with a formal written report to the Council and see where that takes us.

how do you know it does not belong to someone in the block?
how do you know it has been dumped?
the fact that it has been parked off road would imply the person has known they could not use it for a while and have placed it there deliberately.

if they have declared it sorn, then they allowed to park there.

they could have bought it and its broken down, or they plan to sell it, or it needs fixing up etc - if its their parking space too they are allowed to do that.

i would suggest you message everyone in the block asking if its theirs before you touch it - if you move it or have it towed and it belongs to someone they will likely be pretty angry with you and bill you for retrieval of their property.

Joko, We have checked with everyone in the block and no-one knows anything about the vehicle.

As I said in the question it's an Irish-registered vehicle with expired road tax and insurance and it's been there for about 9 months.

I formally reported the vehicle on-line to the Council and the response I've had is they will take the vehicle away if a) we can provide prooof of ownership of the land and b) we pay the appropriate fee.
