Any advice on what to do with my dog alfie. Theirs a female dog on our estate that must be on heat which is making my alfie crazy. He's been up whining since 4 this morning. We've gave him one of my daughter's teddys to hump. But bless him he's going crazy and it's also putting him of his food. Any advice please?

I would try burning incense or something similarly smelly to distract your poor dog or maybe an electronic air fresher. Has your dog been castrated? that will probably help the next time around if that is done.

The neighbouring bitch will be out of season soon and normality will be restored.

Thankyou RATTER15 no he's not been snipped i think it's something we need to think about. I love him all the world and i know it's no way his fault but he's driving me crazy
Lol, I know how you feel, we have 2 complete males in the house and a bitch, when she is in heat we get a dawn chorus at 4 am of two Irish Wolfhounds howling, a sound to behold!
poor thing get him snipped, unless he is going for breeding, imo its the kindest thing to do.
Same problem Ratter. Six bitches and three dogs, though my lot howl regardless of season. Only consolation is that bitches kept together come on together, so it's a passing phase twice a year, and predictable. Damn nuisance if there are neigbouring bitches in different houses and not the same synchronicity though.

Nothing can be done that works, short of castrating the dog.

Jordyboy, I would say that getting the dog castrated "may" not stop him wanting to hump but it usually does. No guarantees though.
I use bio air when my bitches are in season as I have an uncastrated male.

Castration is best, but you can also have an implant which lasts for around six months and has the same effect, but you have to repeat it to stop the dog wanting/being able to father puppies. A lot of people I know use it if they intend breeding from their males at some point, but have bitches in season in the house too. I have two entire males and four bitches at present, but two of my bitches are jabbed to prevent seasons, and one is nearly 18 so just one young bitch to torment the boys. Until you have lived with a randy male and a bitch in season around him you cannot begin to imagine what a pain it is!
I got mine neutered when I got him and in 8 years I only saw him try to hump about 3 times. So was worth it.

Thanks for advice everyone :) and RATTER15 you have my whole sympathy. It drives you nuts doesn't it? Opp pardon the pun lol x
er.....

forgive me for asking, but what is your daughters' reaction to the novel use of her teddy?
Your vet can "chemically castrate" him. Just an injection in the neck and he loses his urges for a few months. It worked a treat with our dog. As soon as the howling started, it was off to the vets. Worked every time and kept his bits intact.
