Get the oil that is specified for your car not any car.

My new car came with a litre of Castrol Edge Professional in a nice zipped case in the boot. I see that it costs up to £20 A LITRE!
The important thing is to match the minimum spec of the oil with your manufacturers stated spec.

It just says BMW recommend Castrol on the filler cap, and BMW long life in the manual.

4 year old, north west and about 20k. It's just for top ups really. Amber light is coming on for 4-5 seconds when turning ignition off after driving home from work, and only then. It's roughly 35 mile journey. BMW manual says that this happens if you are parking up on a hill or slight incline, our drive has a slight incline. In order to sort this out manual says top up with recommended oil, which brings us to my question
