does anyone know if it is possible to play my i pod through the stereo without going through the radio

Just noticed your post again.
Obviously you've tried pressing the AUX or USB button on your actual car stereo when your iPod is connected and playing music.
Failing that, sorry I can't really help much.
Also worth mentioning that the majority of car stereos that can play MP3 tracks actually prefer the music files to be MP3 files and not Apple's AAC format.
