First, look at your household insurance and see if you have any cover for tree root damage.

Yes, he may be liable.

What sort of trees are they, and how long have they been there?
I am going to have a bit of problem with my neighbour's ivy - she has tons of growing at the back of her house and last year decided to plant more near my house. I can never do anything about it cos she has buried 2 sisters in 3 years and we are friendly enough. Will hope she understands cos she did it before and she cut it back - why she grew it again I don't know. It is okay for me to cut it back but am worried when it gets near the roof top and starts growing over to me. I paid a guy £80 to rid of my own ivy - so she knew I don't like it.
You can cut back anything that grows over onto your property Conne - you have to offer it back to her (well, that's the law in England, not sure what it is where you are)
Boxtops - I have a stub of an ivy tree between our fences but the stub is mine - nnow it blew out of proportion and I cut myside down - - God forgive me is there any great stuff out there ie bleach to kill that stub . on my side of course
also meant to say what about the roots of these ivies/ivys. I just want them on my house because of damp end of story.
should have said I DO NOT WANT them on my house because of damp.
Connemmara, you might like to try Roundup for killing off unwanted plants. Also, if you can still get it, sodium chlorate is THE weedkiller to use. It kills just about anything that grows.
Connemmara, An "Ive Tree" Never heard of one of them!
roundup definitely would be no good as it is like a stump you would see in a park - where would I able to buy that sodium
Try Ebay conne, I bought some of there. You will need to put sodium chlorate in the search box.
Buy "root out" or "Root Kill" you can but these products at most garden centres, Conn, if you want to kill the ivy you will need a different weed killer, the ivy is probably growing up the tree, not from the tree.
wrap and secure stump in black plastic so it will die and rot, without harming soil.

Roots under paving can be sawn through to die and rot. Or lay 25k salt bags to seep into and kill roots
I ordered some of Ebay about 2 years ago bookbinder, it came from Turkey !.
So, there you are, Connemmara, get your weedkiller from Turkey!
Bookbinder thanks for that trouble but don't know what decision to make as it is the stump I want to get rid of then hopefully the leaves will die. However you know I will still have problem as her ivy will start to grow over - at the top of the house. Will have to worry then. Wouldn't want to annoy her as she very badly grieving the loss of 2 sisters in 3 years.
Ratter15, you said // An "Ivy Tree" Never heard of one of them! //
but don't you know the song?
"Oh, the oak, and the ash, and the bonny ivy tree,
they flourish at hame in my ain country!"
