Way back in the 1980s if you were looking for a place to rent in London you got the Capital Radio Flatshare list and The Guardian Guide. What do people use nowadays?

Theres Gumtree, or London Flatshare.net

Still plenty of places to rent in local publications too. Pick them up in the newsagents and libraries in the area you'd most prefer to live.
London? terrible rental prices, it may be cheaper to rent just outside London and commute in.

tried those twowebsites, maidup. Any other suggestions?
We used findaproperty.com and a couple of others. They mostly have the same places listed anyway.
Do you not want to try going through letting agents?

Also, if you know the are you want to be in, just take a wonder round one day. The windows are full of home made 'to let' boards with contact numbers on them.

We didn't find the letting agents very helpful, they just wanted to off-load their stuff and didn't really take in to account what we actually wanted. Acorn were the worst offenders actually.
In most major cities, patience with letting agencies is necessary. They do not listen, well most of them, they try and pass their crap properties off first.....London, Brussels, Paris, Holland, it was all the same.....you have to have the patience of a saint and, in my experience, the smaller, newer agencies and you have a much better chance of making the connection.
I was also going to suggest Loot, either in the print version or online:
http://www.loot.com/S...ame=&catname=PROPERTY

The major estate agency websites are also worth a look:

http://www.findaproperty.com/

http://www.zoopla.co....rent/property/london/
