In my opinion look out for top-up style international calling cards. You go into a shop and top it up like you can do for mobile phones. You then use your landline by putting in a diverting code first. I think for �10, for example, you get around 2 hours to Italy and around 3 hours to Canada or America.
Not 100% sure on the exact prices especially regarding on-peak and off-peak though, sorry.
As you're using a PC, look at VoIP options - that's Voice over Internet Protocol.
Best known name is Skype - visit their website - but Tesco in the UK recently announced a similar service and VYKE is another provider that promises to be 5% cheaper than Skype. Should bring the cost of a call from, say, UK to USA down to �0.02 per minute. Visit: www.vyke.com
