Just checking in to see if there's been an update on rat-gate.
Jeza, did you remove the kickboards?
We phoned the council, after weeks of laying down traps with no joy, and he just came round, had a look under the cupboards and put more traps down with a snickers bar as the bait. Think we paid about £80 for that complete waste of time.
It was really stressful, as I never wanted to go in the kitchen. The thought of something crawling all over the place at night made me feel sick. I went through loads of bleach, as I was so paranoid about it spreading disease.
We tried the traditional traps and then glue boards (wouldn't recommend them at all!!) and in the end we laid out some poison.
I posted a question about it on AB at the time, and was told that the rat would eat the poison and "go off and die somewhere else". Well, that didn't really work out, as it died somewhere underneath the floorboards and we had weeks and weeks of the worst smell you could ever imagine.
It got so bad that we ended up ripping up the floorboards in all the rooms downstairs - but STILL never found him.
I used to come home from work and put a face mask on at the front door, it was THAT bad!
If it does die in your house, just a personal opinion, don't bother buying anything that claims to either mask or absorb the odour. I bought two large bags from Rentokil, which were supposedly 'industrial strength' and they did bugger all.
Good luck :-)
