The Millenium Trilogy

Having read the first book (quite "dark") I watched all three films on tv this weekend and found them pretty appalling, violence and sex-wise. Gratuitous violence and sex scenes not necessary to make the plot stand. Over-rated in my opinion and I will probably just skim the other two books. Also the political ins and outs with Swedish names and character's who's name and role I can't remember is confusing. Reading the subtitles whilst trying to see the goings on on screen sometimes means I miss something (or did I?)

I don't really understand why you think the violence and sex is unnecessary to make the plot stand, both are quite critical to Lisbeth Salander's rather mysterious character, she doesn't see violence and sex the same way we would, plus it's all part of turning the female role on its head (as marwel7 touched on). Plus the rape scene in the first film is pretty crucial.
The films reflect the books fairly accurately (all things considered) so why the violence and sex would be acceptable in the books but not the films does rather confuse me.

I thought these three books were some of the best I've read for years. Not an easy or escapist subject but I couldn't put them down. Only seen the Skandy versions of the films and thought they were brilliant but then I watch all the Skandy stuff on BBC4 too. I'm addicted. Their Wallendar is so much better than the British version. i really feel I should be able to speak Swedish by now but it's not working......
