Beach Huts

Not sure where to put this so sorry if it's in the wrong place :)

We are looking at perhaps getting a beach hut on Hayling Island and I cannot beleive that the ground rent and some other licience is MORE than band A council tax.

£1004 just to have a shed!!! No gas, electric or lighting, security or free parking. Nothing. Band A Council tax is only £960

That s expensive. We pay £220 for the summer in Torbay, and £200 for winter storage (they have to be out away from the front for the winter), and I moan about that!

I think theres over a hundred along the front so they are raking it in. And you get nothing in return!!

That's exactl what I was about to say, woofgang, as I was scrolling down the answers. People pay incredible sums for beach huts and I fail to see the attraction. A grand for what, as you say cassa, is little more than a glorified shed (in fact some that I've seen look less than glorified) is preposterous. I would recommend you save your cash. You can get a night in a reasonable B&B for £60-£70. Nice comfy bed, and a full English for two. For your Grand you could have about fifteen nights away in different places throughout the summer instead of feeling obliged to get your money's worth from your shed by sitting in the cold and damp at every opportunity.

I know we could go on a few nights away for that.

That of course is just the ground rent for the shed to be there. The shed itself cost about £10,000.

Just not worth it :(

There must be enough people with spare money to get one though.

cassa333. Buy yourself a ''Shed on Wheels''. A towing caravan, there are scores of sites throughout the country where you can park your ''shed'' & have a different venue every time if that pleases you & your family.

My parents have got one in Dorset. I have no idea how much they paid for it, and it's not something I would ask either, but I know it wasn't cheap.
However, it's a bit more than a "shed". It's fairly large, even though it's packed to the rafters with deckchairs, a BBQ and the kids' buckets and spades.
Also, they get a hell of a lot of use out of it. The whole family goes down there in the summer and we stay there until the sun goes down. It's lovely if the weather is good.
You can also rent them out, but it's not something I would do personally.
You don't know what riff raff you might get in them, or how people will leave them. My parents have become good friends with the owners of the nearby huts, it's like a little hut-owner community! :)
Although it's lovely, my Mum has done it out beautifully, for me I think the novelty would wear off. I quite like the idea of a motorhome because, as Ron says, it gives you so much more freedom and choice.
