Laptop Sleep Mode?

so, my laptop (all of 6 weeks old) has gone in for repair and I have a loan laptop. it's a Compaq CQ57, which was at factory settings. I've set it up, linked it to my wifi, found 75 "important updates", updated Adobe, etc... when it asked me to reboot to instal the updates I found that... it reverts to factory settings at EVERY START-UP! arghhhhh!

I'm thinking of just shutting the lid rather than shutting down at night. will the laptop go into sleep mode? if so, how do I wake the beast?

I don't want to do that, Caz.. it'll wipe everything again when I re-start

But that could be why I'm on my 3rd laptop in 3 years :-D

thanks methyl but I can't take it back. it was dropped off by the people who picked up my laptop.
