Hi,

The cahrity I run has been asked to fund the day to day costs of a (rival) charity website.

We have mutual aims ect so do not have a problem with this.

However we are concerned about the costs. They have told us it costs £100 per month to host and as our charity doesn't have a web site at present they will add A page for a further £100 per month.

Is this a reasonable cost? It does seem disproportionate that their whole website will be costing the same as our one page!!!

I thought that if you were a registered charity it was free . . . . .
£100 a month??
thats a heck of a lot.
I use 123-reg for my company one. http://www.123-reg.co.uk/web-hosting/
Sounds very unreasonable.
Ask them for a simple breakdown of the direct costs and their added allocation of overheads.
Ring round a couple of smaller hosting organisations to get a comparison cost.
That seems excessive for the hosting (but a 1 off £100 payment for designing a single web page is not too far off the mark)

Does this site have a huge amount of traffic, does the £100 a month include a set level off bandwidth usage (the commit) and if so what is it and what is the cost of going over the commit?
How many pages does it currently have, to double the cost for one page sounds a lot.
Oh, just spotted it was £100 a month to add 1 extra page...

that is a rip off plain and simple!
Charities can get free sites.
See here for example

It may be worth starting with one of these.

Thanks Everyone.

It does confirm my own thoughts that it does seem excessive. I will just pop off to count how many pages they already have.

This is what I cut and pasted from their website.

It is a lovely site and modern. Our own site (that died) was so old you could almost hear the gears clanking lol

I have asked if they paid for the design seperatly to the monthly fee. You never know they may be paying for the design through the rather high 'day to day' costs of the £100.

Thank

£100 a month????? Blimey - that's ridiculous!

I charge £100 a year to SMEs, which includes domain registration (or transfer if already registered and hosted somewhere else) and unlimited updates...

Charities and individuals can always negotiate a discount. Large corporates pay quite a bit more, but that's just business...
are they including in this the cost fro someone to update regularly, post news and pics etc too?

if not thats ridiculous....sound like they are trying it on with you which is shameful - or osmeone has tried ot on with them in whoch case they need to be warned

i would decline the offer and go it alone using one of the cheaper hosting sites...you may be able to find a student or even a pro who will actually build you a separate site for free as its a chsrity
