Have been chewing my pencil for the last couple of hours and trying all over the place on the internet, etc. Just can't work this one out, can someone enlighten me please ...

"The third largest city in this country was founded about 1,000 years ago, and today is an important educational destinatio, especially in the technology sector. The city has a gothic cathedral, is a great destination for lovers of seafood and has a football team that frrequently punches above its weight. Name the city"

The pictures are (a) roofed house with white painted walls and lots of windows, looking like it's perched on the top of a hill covered in green grass (b) two violins and two wind instruments mounted on a blue wall (c) an action still from a football game, one team looks like Barcelona, the other team's strip is white with dark blue and lighter blue stripes on the chest (d) a section of what presumably is a cathedral exterior with carved statues of saints.

Many thanks, Chox.

Here's what I think - without having seen the pictures.
I reckon it could be VALENCIA as it's Spains third largest city. Valencia is Unesco's "City of Art's and Science's". It was founded in 138 BC by the Romans. The football reference could be Valencia, but their home kit is mainly white shirts with Joma, Solar Jinko and MSC advertising logo's - black trim and wide vertical pinstrip effect.
Possibly Valencia ???
and the seafood reference: Valencia is where that Paella stuff comes from, and they have both Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestra's and Arts Centres.
Trondheim, Norway

Hmmm, Valencia sounds like a good shot, but have checked the football strip and it's definitely neither of the two strips shown in the picture.

The footie picture looks more like a British football ground - and Crystal Palace play in the same colours as Barcelona - but it's definitely not them!

Noodles - what are your thoughts re Trondheim - have checked their footie strip (it's Rosenberg), but the strip isn't the same as in the picture.

Chox.

Having doubts about Valencia now - although some of the facts fit (still haven't seen any of the pics though).

Trondheim does have a Gothic (St Olav) cathedral that does have stone saints inbuilt into it's walls in arched recesses. Also has a music / musical instruments museum (Ringve Museum). Being Norway and on the coast it obviously is good for seafood. Although I haven't seen the pics, I know Rosenborg play in white shirts with black trim and black shorts at home. But they do on occasions punch above their weight in European tournaments, and Rosenborg have announced they will play Barcelona in a friendly on 27 July to commemorate their centenery. Trondheim also has a university of Science and Technology.
Any chance of links to photos etc?
Chokkie............. Is this the church with the saints in the walls?

If it is then it's St Olav Cathedral also known as Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim
I would answer, but for some reason on the Observer website, Viewfinder for today is still showing last week's contest(21/4, Hereford)
- they haven't updated it, which is odd!
Trondheim was founded in 997 ("about 1,000 years ago"); it is home to two universities, one of which is the Norwegian University of Science and Technology with 24,000 students - about a fifth of Trondheim's inhabitants are students (thanks Wiki). The gothic cathedral is Nidaros Cathedral - that is where the statues are. Every gothic cathedral in Europe seems to have rows of statues, but the ones in the photo match the ones in Trondheim. Trondheim is home to Rosenborg BK (RBK) one of the best teams in Norway - I know2 the strip doesn't match but I think the photograph is just a generic football shot. The violins are in the Ringve Museum of Music in Trondheim, the funny one with a horn is a Stroh violin. The white building is the Kristiansten festning - a fortress built in Trondheim in 1681.

thanks so much noodles, Mr. Chox and I have been puzzling about it for hours, so glad to have the definite answer. Cheers for your help. Chox.
The footie photo is definitely Palace. The Eagles badge is just about recognisable, and the shirt sponsor logo seems to match. Their opponents are playing in all white, which Rosenborg do apparently. And the player Steffen Iversen played for both teams. He looks like the player highest in the photo.

I feel I've failed having to resort to this site, though. ;)
Hi Chox,
Take a look at TRONDHEIM, Norway.
