Why Is Sheffield Wednesday Called "the Owls"?

On Friday, on Pointless, Richard Osborne said it was because a player once gave them an owl as a gift. I always thought it was because the ground was/is in the borough of Owlerton. If so, where does Hillsborough come into it? Come on you Wednesday fans. Give us the facts!

"Sheffield Wednesday are the only English League club with a day of the week in their name. The club was initially a cricket club named The Wednesday Cricket Club after the day of the week on which they played their matches. The footballing side of the club was established to keep the team together and fit during the winter months.

slark's link gives another explanation for Owls to that given in the other wiki entry quoted. Prefer the gift of an owl because that suggests English eccentricity, but who knows ?
