I asked because the big hill you see leaving Scarborough is Staxton Hill over the Wolds to Driffield which people often use as a route to York if the main road A 64 is busy. That is a bit of a climb and I have been stuck in heavy snow on it.
To avoid the hill at Whitwell you have to get off the A64 via a back road between Stamford Bridge and Malton which can be confusing unless your navigator can read a map.
I suggest you use the A64 all the way though as the road over Whitwell was brought up to date a few years back and should be fine in an average car as the gradient was improve.
