This article suggests that it's ' unhealthy' to allow children to have best friends. I would disagree and think it's perfectly normal to like some people more than others. What does everyone else think? Can you realistically 'force' children not to have best friends and even if you can should you?http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22383453

.... Sorry Shar, I didn't address the actual question. I don't think its wrong at all to have best friends. I don't think it's anything you can enforce OR discourage. BEST friendships just happen.
I don't actually have any friends (never mind a best one) unless you count my oh.
I have two 'best' friends - one of a lifetime's duration, one of 14 years. They have been a wonderful support, provider of laughter, a shoulder for terms and a lifeline, particularly In times of need. I love them both dearly, and know if anything happened to me, my daughter would have 2 surrogate mothers. They are quite different in temperament and personality, and that's a good thing also.
How on earth can you stop a child (esp a girl) from having a best friend? Any why on earth would you want to anyway.

I have to add I am also lucky enough to have lots of other friends, colleagues and female family s members. But my 2 BF's mean the world.

I don't like the term 'best', I prefer 'trusted' friends and we are always there for each other.
