SSL - Secure Sockets Layer.

It basically means that anything transmitted between your computer and the remote computer is encrypted which is especially good for things like credit card details.

As for how you get SSL back on. Assuming you're using Internet Explorer try going to:

Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab > scroll most of the way to the bottom > Make sure "Use SSL 2.0" and "Use SSL 3.0" are ticked.

Hopefully that should enable SSL. There are other possible causes for this, but thats the most likely.

Secure Sockets Layer is a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet.

Most commonly used for secure web sites e.g. starting with https rather than just http
