mk5 escort whining noise sounds as though its comming from the gearbox,took it to garage when 1st heard whining noise & they said its a common fault on escorts but the whining noise is becomming louder now?

I take it you have checked the gearbox oil level, wheel bearings, CV joints, tyres and mudflaps?

Hi kazz. I would do what stanleyman has suggested but I have to tell you it is a common problem esp on the I.4 Escort as this happened to mine at around the 70k mark. The whining on mine got worse and worse over a few weeks. This can be caused by bearings inside which can be replaced but the box still needs to be taken out. I got a ford replacement unit about 8 yr ago and it was around �600 then.

yeh checked all them what stanleyman suggested,thanks! mines the 1.6 model,it seems to be noiser the lower the gear your in.think its time to p/x it in.thanks for your help.
