reverse gear in my automatic ford mondeo, has stopped working

My reverse gear has gone in my ford automatic mondeo. the normal gears were a bit gittery but are now ok and left me with no reverse. any clue

1. Check if there is enough oil in the gearbox, also look at the color of the oil on the dipstick, it should be clear and red (usually) or maybe a light brown, but if it is dark brown and cloudy etc... and smells ''burned'' then you have a problem with the gearbox.
2. Check that the gear selector is actually moving the gearbox end of the system to the correct position when the lever is moved. maybe a loose cable or connector.
