Ryobi Rlt5030S Easy Edge Electric Line Trimmer

Does anyone have any hints on how to use the edging facility of the above. We either get ridges in the lawn an inch or so from the edge or if it is moved the other way it does not cut the grass.

Is it just a matter of getting ones eye in so to speak?

Our old B&D had a guide that you put between the lawn and the path.

Any hints would be greatly appreciated.
