A friend living in SW. France has a tiny sunken courtyard garden with a stone wall about 10 feet high that retains the land behind it up to the top of the wall. It faces West so gets the sun from midday until the shadow of the house falls on it at about 3-4pm. In the winter it gets hardly any sun. As she works away from home for up to 2 months at a time she needs some plants that can be naturalised in crevices with no expectation of care afterwards. Any suggestions welcomed.

Try campanula (bellflower) - the dwarf variety, suitable for partial shade and great for crevices.
Look at Valerian, they grow in walls all over the place.
