Pure Cotton Sheets Creasing

I recently splashed out on a pure cotton John Lewis fitted sheet, paying much more than usual and not really doing any research. It was really stiff on opening so I washed it at 40deg as per instructions. Anyway it came out more creased than anything I've seen before, millions of small crumples that even the hottest iron won't shift properly (and I never normally iron sheets). I've rewashed and the same thing. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

Must be normal. I too paid a lot of money for 650 thread sheets and I just cannot get the creases out. I have washed them several times now and used lots of conditioner but they still crease. Does'nt look very nice but I have given up trying to iron them.

Why not try to iron them when there is still an element of dampness about them? Then all you need to do after is air them thoroughly - might work.

I bought an 800 thread egyptian cotton sheet, easy to iron, doesn't crease but it is going bobbly. Think will go back to polycotton.

I bought a beautiful - and expensive - set of pure cotton bedding - and for the very reason you mention, ended up giving the whole lot to the charity shop (and I have a ironing press!). Hopeless!

Life's too short to iron sheets hence I won't buy pure cotton much as I'd like to.

You are right LB and thanks all, wished I'd looked into it before, it never crossed my mind there would be a problem. Honestly even at top hot with steam the iron won't shift it. Quite a waste of money.

Send them to a laundry. My local dry-cleaners also do cotton sheets and those really huge boring quilt covers, too, and they use a steam press with rollers. Lovely result.

I've only ever bought pure cotton bedlinen and have never ironed any of it - how much time do you spend awake worrying about any creases? I also wash it at 60 degrees, whatever the label says!

never ever buy pure cotton, you can't iron it, like linen it will crease like the devil within moments.

I spent £30 on a Egyptian cotton sheet and the only way I can tell it apart from a £5 sheet is the label!

What a waste of your money; try taking them back. If anyone is going to refund on them, John Lewis will!

Glad I read this, I was going to splurge on some cotton bedding. I do have a cotton set from Ikea which is a bugger to iron but can do it, mind you after you've slept in it for one night it looks like it's been pulled through a hedge backwards.

I always use cotton bedding and towels etc and NEVER ever put fabric conditioner in the wash....EVER!! It makes the cotton stiff and very difficult, nay impossible, to iron. If I ever have any problems, I hand them into a local ironing shop. Don't throw out cotton bedding until you've tried washing them at a low setting(40) and totally conditioner free. The more you wash, the softer they become. Good luck.

I'll try it without conditioner. I'm not talking a few creases, it comes out of the machine like it, a weird stiffness almost like it's made of plastic and the creases, well, imagine screwing up kitchen foil into a ball and then opening it, just like that, a crackled crumpling all over. Can't be arsed quite frankly.

Try spinning at a much lower spin speed for a shorter time.
They will have to go out to dry outside afterwards.

I only have cotton fitted sheets and linen duvet cover and pillow cases and don't have a problem with excessive creasing.

As gingebee has suggested a shorter, low speed spin means the bedding comes out less crumpled and the weight of the residual water seeping downwards when the washing is hanging on the line draws out the creases.
