For some unknown reason all my documents saved in Word have strange little quotation marks at the end of every sentence or imported picture. The words of text also have fullstops between each word too. Think the gremlins have got in or I have done something I shouldn't! Never seen this problem before and I use Word a lot. Funnily enough, the strange hieroglyphics don't show up on the printed copy so it's not that urgent but want to get rid of it on the screen. Any advice please?

Have a look at your tool bar for a back to front P and click on it, it sounds like you are showing 'codes' or whatever the term is.
It sounds like you turned on the display of formatting chars - click on this control in the home section of the ribbon

Sounds like you've accidentally changed "view" modes. If you go to the view menu you can change to "normal", "web" etc.
Bibble has explained and demonstrated exactly what I meant but I couldn't confirm as I' m on my iPad.
turn off "show all non printing characters" either from the ribbon or from options

Hurray - you brilliant people, thanks a lot! Especially to Bibble, who showed me exactly the symbol to look for! Everything is fine now thanks ..... don't remember clicking on that symbol, hadn't even noticed it before, so will remember it now! Thanks everyone! xx
you're very welcome, glad the pic helped
Deliberately activate that in order to spot extra spaces and oher stuff that ought not be there, or maybe carriage return/line feeds that are better served by page breaks or white space.
