My computer has recently begun to run really slowly, and it's getting annoying. I've been told that I should get software to help clean it up so it'll run faster, but I don't know which one to get. Anyone have a preference? And why? I have absolutely no idea which one is best. Thanks.

I'm no expert but would suggest you download Microsoft Security Essentials & Malwarebytes (the free version - you want the left arrow).

http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security/pc-security/mse.aspx

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

When you've downloaded them, find the "Update" tab & do so.

Now run them in "Full Scan" mode (not together) - they will almost certainly take a while to complete.

Please don't download/buy anything that says "we'll clean up your registry", or some such claim - they're taking you for a ride - registry issues are almost never going to be the cause of a slow computer. No-one should be paying for "security", as the real experts on AB have stated in the past.

If you leave your PC on 24/7, sometimes a router reset can help, as can clearing your browser cache (can't hurt anyway).

I hope this has been of some help & that I've not steered you in the wrong direction.

"Today is Microsoft Updates day and many PCs using Microsoft Operating Systems will be running slow."

Sorry, but that's nonsense - you download the updates, restart & everything's fine.

Sorry Methyl the updates thing is a red herring, more than 90% of windows based operating systems are configured to download then update at the next shut down I believe a few Linux based systems as different.

Anyway, whatever make and model your PC/laptop is you can do the following with out any major stresses:

Go into your internet browser, tools and options and delete the Caches/history etc (depending on your nbrowser the words will be different but the same process). You should be given options on what to delete, lets you save URLs/associated passwords that sort of stuff while clearing the thousands of page imprints you have from your internet browsing.

Next; download a reputable Ad/malware suite which should clearall the crap that's hiding and slowing it down to a large extent. ( The AVG suite is good)

After that you're looking at hardware, how much memory is in the machine? What Operating system is in use?? Anything you can tell us about the machine spec will help any advice we can give you
Glary Utilities presuming you have a Windows system. This is the one I have found to have the most useful tools for system cleanup ; again I'm presuming that's what your computer needs.
I suggest that you use the 1-click maintenance tab first.
