At present the UK has 893 troops stationed in Afghanistan, following the US-led invasion.
In January 2006 a major increase was announced, with numbers set to rise to a peak of 5,700 over the following three years at a cost of �1bn. Most are being sent to the volatile Helmand area in southern Afghanistan.

The troops are not going out there to help "rebuild" they are going out there to try and stop the Taliban from getting control again, which by all accounts that i have managed to read on the internet they are doing quite successfully. Outside of the major cities like Kabul the Taliban and other assorted "warlords" are firmly in control, using their modus operandi of choice, violence fear, murder etc. For the past few years there have been numerous murders and bombings carried out by the very people we thought we had eradicated, but the press in the UK have been playing them down , if reporting them at all.
