Here is a tale for you; A little old lady went to the Pharmacy in her local Tesco to ask if she brought in a bag of unused prescription drugs would they destroy them, as requested on the Pharmacy wrapper. She was met with a suspicious look....it all depends what they are, is it Heroin? She answered no, the Pharmacist then, condescendingly, agreed to look through her bag of returns and take out the ones he can destroy and give back the 'other' kind.

boxy that is wrong, the NHS contract says they should take all meds back, not used sharps (which should be in a bin) yes they shouldn't go to landfill but neither should even stuff like paracetamol go out with the rubbish where children or animals might get hold of it. Here's what the NHS says...scroll down to the bottom...

Well it was a bit rich Boxy. I had injected him for years and always exchanged a full box of used syringes for a new one at the hospital where he was treated. When he died I took the used ones back but they sent me away because he was no longer a patient! x
When my husband died, I too was left with lots of medical supplies - I tried and tried to get the District Nurse team who had constantly told me how hard it was to acquire them , to take them away.

Eventually my Son in Law, took a big box and walked into their offices and said ' These are yours' and left them on the front desk.
No sharps in mine, they took those the day he died, somethings should be made easier when you are already struggling.
so much for compassion, gness :-(
I think it is disgraceful that unused prescription meds are destroyed when they are still in their blister packs. People in third world countries are crying out for them. My elderly Mum was accidentally given someone else's prescription from Boots when I collected it a few months ago. I was immediately suspicious as it was such a HUGE bag of tablets so I opened it while still standing at the counter. I told the pharmacist they were the wrong ones and must belong to someone else. She checked, found out they were - and apologised but in the next breath told me that sadly they would now have to "be binned" . I couldn't believe it, I hadn't even taken the boxes out just peered in the top of the bag in her presence too! How absolutely wasteful is that! I was annoyed at this stupid ruling, told her so and the customers standing waiting all agreed with me!
I think it's appalling, Ann.
