Its earliest recorded uses appear in the 1820s. It is based on the idea of 'win' meaning 'gain' or 'obtain', as in "He won his commission during the war." Thus, a breadwinner is someone who works to obtain the money necessary for him and his dependants to live on.
for bread meaning the necessities of life, perhaps more than just food, I suppose the Lord's Prayer - 'give us this day our daily bread'
