Game Controller

My 12 year old son wants to get a game controller for his Mac computer. Been to PC world but the 'Apple product professional' didn't seem overly confident in his recommendation of a wired Xbox controller (and it wasn't cheap). What does the boy need to get so he can use a game controller with his Mac? (We have loads of wireless Xbox controllers and the boy has tried to see if he can use the controller from the (ancient) play station in the car but that doesn't work.) Thanks for any help.
