when did this start?

it seems like a really daft design to me - i cannot see any logical reason to put it in the middle of the wheel.

its awkward, and hard to use - because often, the moment you need to use it, the very time when you need to absolutely keep both hands firmly on the wheel and be in 100% control of the steering - such as on a motorway and someone starts veering across in front of you, and you need to move away slightly to ensure they don't hit you , while alerting them to your presence - is the time they expect you to take one hand off the wheel to beep!

i have had a few occasions recently where someone warranted a beep but i could not do it because i had to take slight evasive action.

didn't they used to be on a stalk?

why did they change? is there some reason for it?

cheers

My car horn is on the steering wheel but right at the edge , you can press it with your thumb while keeping both hands on the wheel.

i have not tried it with my thumb, as the symbol is right in the low centre and, i seem to remember it needing a bit of a 'push' to work it.

ill try that though.
You should be able to sound the horn by pushing almost anywhere on the centre of the steering wheel.
In the hub of the steering wheel, it is equidistant from both hands , wherever they are on the wheel.. Anywhere else, it isn't.

I can reach mine with either thumb, with hands on the steering wheelrim.
When you find yourself needing to use the horn at short notice 9 times out of 10 you may find the brake more conveniently located and effective!

Horns have been centre mounted on a lot of cars for many many years, to be honest I prefer it there, I find it totally accessible.
well said jake...according to the highway code, the horn has one use only and that is to alert other roadusers to your presence.
A wheel mounted horn does have one use...Years ago I watched a dog in a supermarket carpark. He was standing in the driver seat leaning over the back of it helping himself to shopping out of a bag on the back seat and merrily sounding the horn with his bum!
