Gedcom File

I am using Family Tree Maker and cannot back it up. I get the message "a generic error occured" so I have downloaded another Family Tree program and want to transfer details from one to the other, It is asking for a GEDCOM file- how do I GET IT AND WHERE FROM? i HAVE BEEN THROUGH ALL THE DROP DOWN MENUS and cannot find it listed. Many thanks in advance

In Family Tree Maker click File/Export File/Entire file. In the next menu put file name desired, In the 'Save as type' box select GEDCOM (last option).

You should then be able to import it into your new program.
