I have had to have a new computer and it now runs windows 7, my old one was XP so everything is different
how do I stop the desktop icons moving back to the left side and keep them where I want to put them

On the desktop screen right click, select view, then unselect "auto arrange icons".

Works for me, you might also take the tick out of 'align icons to grid'
