My job involves working in market research, and I'm not too sure about the validity of this poll.
Firstly and most importantly, it's a very small subset of data. 1121 sounds a lot, but really isn't for something of this scope. Secondly, that subset of people are Daily Mail readers. It's a poll set up by the newspaper, and those subset of people are, shall we say, a little more reactionary with these things. I'm a little surprised it's only 63% to be honest.

Having said that I'm also surprised that there is a strong moderate element to the results. As much distaste for the EDL as there is for Anjem Choudary

Thanks ummmm!
The death penalty is a great deterrent to suicide bombers!

Seriously I'm really surprised it's that low.

A few days after the Woolwich attack and it's not even two thirds?!?

Makes you think there might even be a majority opposing the death penalty in less tense times - which would be in the face of conventional wisdom.

It's certainly a lot more split than I'd have thought
Had I been a policeman facing that cleaver-wielding maniac, I'm pretty sure I'd have been tempted to shoot him dead. I'm not surprised by the result of the poll. The death penalty certainly wouldn't deter potential suicide bombers, but it would remove them from society - permanently.

the death penalty for people who merely have potential? Drastic.
I think being a suicide bomber would actually remove you from society...not the death penalty!
Totally agree Naomi, if anybody came at me with a weapon, I would not hesitate to shoot to kill.

I was once in the position of having two thugs at my door looking for my step-son,they were both twice my size. I was totally focused on how long it would take me to pop two cartridges in my 12 bore and I was all set to load it, I would certainly have used it without a second thought if it was needed, I hasten to add that I have never shown any physical aggression toward anybody in my life but mess with my family its a different story.

jno. //the death penalty for people who merely have potential? Drastic.//

You missed the bit that said 'The death penalty certainly wouldn't deter ....... "
Can't help wondering what the Woolwich suspect who said that only women could attend do the victim, that apparently being part of his beliefs about the role of women, thought when he discovered that one of the armed response unit who shot him and his colleague was a woman.

If these people are set upon being martyrs for the cause, it doesn't seem likely that the prospect of the death penalty will deter them. More likely is that they will kill and expect to die, if need be killing any police officer who turns up before being shot dead themselves

In other words, get your pre-emptive strike in first.
I will never support bringing back the death penalty, as there has been far too many miscarriages of justice over the years, mostly due to sloppy investigations by the Police. For example, Timothy Evans:::

There are numerous others, and anyway, look at other places in the world that have the death penalty and it just doesn't work. It has no effect on the
murder rate whatsoever. Would the Phillpotts have acted differently if we had the death penalty ?

But this argument that one persons murder is worse than another persons beggers belief. By imposing different jail sentences, the different types of murders can be addressed by the Court. But executing someone can't...its the same to the murderer whoever has been killed.
