Have you tried adding calgon to the washing machine? What precisely is the problem?

Yes Woofgang, have tried adding Calgon to the machine, but it is the white soapy deposits that are left on clothes after washing, as though the soap powder (in tablet form) had not disintegrated during the wash, even though correct temp was used.
Anyway, though it was easier for me to add soap powder in tablet form, I think a change to liquid soap may prove more useful. But a Big Ta for answering though.
I live in a hard water area and don't have problems with deposits of washing powder on clothes.

Are you stuffing too much into the machine and consequently the clothes aren't getting rinsed properly?

Good point, EC!
I am with eccles on this. Never fill the machine more than 3/4 max, 2/3 is preferable. If you have large items to wash, then use liquid detergent.
you can buy liquitabs which might help your problem - easier for somone with poor vision to put in but don't leave white marks
I agree - the problem you have has nothing to do with water hardness.
You could use liquids or gels which leave no deposits at all.
Similar to eccles too, no deposits of powder on clothes but then we use powder only, perhaps it's the tablets?
I live in a very hard water area and use liquid detergent and have never had any deposits left on my washing.I to used to have the deposits when I used powder which is why I changed to liquid
