A high class piece about endlessly brilliant classical writer (8)

I have A*G*S*A* which suggests "Augustan" (AU being "A high class", I think..). But I can't find a reference to an Augustan and in any case I can't work out the rest of the reasoning. I'd be very grateful for help as I am quite new to this level of crossword.

I sort of understand the analysis except that it says "writer" not writers. I thought that was significant but clearly I am wrong.
But thank you all once again. I really feel that I am part of a warm helpful group.
