"Brighter than Parian marble..." The semi-transparent marble, from which the statue of Venus de Milo in the Louvre is carved, is found on the Greek island of Pros. The marble's glorious beauty caused the Roman poet, Horace, to say that the 'glow' of the beautiful woman, Glycera, was 'brighter than Parian marble'.
Next time your girlfriend is looking for a compliment, try telling her that's what she is, too, Martyn!
Fred, one must, of course, go on to explain to the lady that one is referring to her positively ethereal glow. Mentioning the eternal beauty of the Venus de Milo and how it reminds one of the lady herself probably won't do one any harm either. (And, let's face it, the chances that she's ever even heard the word 'Parian' - never mind its association with cheapo pottery - are pretty remote.)
