Could be a number of things as the light is brought on by lots of different sensors. You need to have it looked at by someone with diagnostic equipment.

yea it does not stay on all time but am using one hell of a lot of petrol ??
You have already got the answer from Cheeky!

I have the same problem. The engine is running on back up systems instead of main ECU programme. Knowing Vauxhall its just to get you to get it serviced. I have been having the problem with mine since last April when Vauxhall told me my head gasket had gone...it didn't fix the problem. My fault is slightly different where I have gone through 19 litres of oil without bad exhaust fumes or even a drop leaking and its not in the water. Beginning to wonder if mines the cat convertor but have also heard rumours that I have had sugar put in my petrol tank.

Can't afford to fix mine. Won't even start with jump leads now. The last time I used it the engine management light was only on for 3 miles and according to vauxhall it should be driveable. When I get it fixed I'm seriously considering selling it. Its R reg with only 53000 genuine miles... its cost me a fortune!!!
