I have had AVG protection for about 2 years now it is coming up I have to pay for it. Used to have norton and did pay for it but I do know there are others you don't have to pay for. When I hit AVG icon at bottom of page it tells me you are protected but instead of being clear colour there is an exclamation mark on top of it. Also beside it is another heart-shaped icon with an x on it and it has something to with windows.

I google chrome - and am on Windows XP could anyone please advise what to re this or shall I uninstall and insert another anti-virus - I do have that Malaware thing on the desktop - hope that is enough info for an answer.

It seems like it wants you to upgrade to the paid version (for whatever reason).
Uninstall it and then reinstall it:

Don't bother with rthe free trial one - it's more hassle than it's worth in my opinion.
AVG likes to prompt you to buy their full security suite but the basic anti-virus protection is still available totally free of charge. If you want to stick with AVG, I suggest uninstalling it

and then downloading, and installing, the latest version:

However, ChuckFickens (who is widely regarded as AB's Number 1 Technology expert) recommends using Microsoft's own free security software, Microsoft Security Essentials:

You mention 'Malaware'. I'm guessing that you're referring to Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. It's an excellent program (which partners AVG and MSE equally well) but, if you've got the free version, it only 'runs on demand', rather than 'in the background'. That means that it does absolutely nothing at all unless you actually run it from time to time. (Once every few weeks is probably good enough).
