Seriously, I cannot fathom why anyone would want to put themselves through this ordeal:

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/simon-reed/sharapova-v-azarenka-noisiest-match-ve-ever-heard-100009572.html

The rally starting at3.50 in the clip is quite shocking.

Why did we never hear the likes of Evert, Wade and Goolagong doing this when I was a kid?

I said exactly the same during this afternoon's (Nadal) match. The blokes are getting as bad.

Missed it this afternoon (working).

Was it that bad gingejbee?
Because they weren't taught in Florida, or by people following that teaching. Girls were taught to grunt on hitting the ball. Boys weren't. You don't hear Nadal or Federer or any American man doing it, yet they hit the ball far harder and with just as much effort
Chilli....well they are women .........aren't they?.........modern women too.

I agree with you...I cannot see the point either mentally or physically of this constant screaming.

If it was advantageous, then why don't the men do it?

Because it isn't.
Well, it was bad enough and I'm not really expecting the men to be doing it...!
Fred...you didn't hear Nadal this afternoon, then?
The most revealing moment was watching Sharapova in a US Open match either last year or the year before. She was losing, or doing badly, and just stopped screaming. It was surreal. The commentators picked up on it, and all.

That's enough for me to believe that it's a choice. And, therefore, nothing more than gamesmanship.
No, I was at Newmarket races. Even the fillies weren't screaming or grunting there ! Nadal has been out of the game for a while. Maybe he's feeling the effort now he's back.
I watched the Sharapova-Azarenka match with the sound off - I knew what was coming. Never heard Nadal make so much noise during a match as he did to-day, but a wonderful semi-final.

I thought the WTA and LTA were supposed to clamping down on this, as John Lloyd said 18 months ago:
