That could be the sound of Internet Explorer blocking pop-ups in which you can not do anything but you could switch off your speakers (??!!)

Thanks Mazzini but it's not a pop-up blocker. Whilst using skype when clicking between pages I get a 'click' which the other person can hear as well, turning off the speakers is unfortunately not an option but many thanks. J
I you go to the start menu - control panel, click 'sounds and audio devices' and the tab called 'sounds'. Here you can choose the sound for various functions including windows explorer. I think 'start navigation' is the one you want, or you can do what I did - select 'sound scheme' - 'no sounds' and get rid of the lot!

Fabbo smorodina, that's the one - and it is 'start navigation', many thanks, you're a star.
