Problem Accessing Netgear Router Settings After Os Re-Install

I re-installed Xp on Friday. It went fine except for a subsequent problem accessing my Netgear router settings. On Thursday I could access it no problem using 192.168.0.1 and backed up my settings. After re-install I can't get the little box coming up asking for the username and password.

I have checked that the 'obtain an IP address automatically' and ' obtain DNS server address automatically' are selected in network connections. I have reset the router to make sure the IP address is the factory set one.

I still have the set up disk and decided to use that instead. It keeps telling me that I should have a ethernet adapter and it can't prodeed until I have. I didn't have one on Thursday and it worked just great. Help would be greatly appreciated.

It is a Netgear N300 wireless ADSL+ Modem Router (DGN2200). Sorry for my vagueness. I am using the ethernet cable. I am not sure if the internet connection is working on the computer. But I can see that the modem router is connected to the internet as that green light is on.

There are not any other routers around that I am aware of, certainly we don't have any more than one. I will try to check my IP address as you suggest methyl. I am in the library just now using their facilities but will check when I get home. The troubleshooting guide in the manual mentions problems with computer and router IPs not being in same range or something, but I didn't know how to check my computer's IP.

Methyl is correct. As you have reformatted, you will need to put in your routers installation disc. Then when prompted connect your router to the PC with an ethernet cable.
After it's all set up, you can set it up as wireless and remove the ethernet cable. Which is why you never had one last week.

Thanks for the info bongoboy. I am using the ethernet cable. I tried to get the IP address up Methyl, but it was just blank.

I actually think now that it might be that I am missing some of those Broadcom files that run some of the adapters. I think I might need Broadcom Gigabit Integrated Controller. It was on my computer before and isn't now. I think that's what the installation disc is saying. I have a 'Broadcom Management Programs' structure on my computer now, but there are no adapters in it! Ekkk. Going to go and look for a download now.
