Apart from the Murray's unseen mutt, why are there no dogs or cats in Brookside Close? They used to have pets, didn't they?

Jimmy Corkhill had 'Cracker' for ages and I'm sure Harry Cross had a small dog of some sort. Jemma Johnson had a guinea pig or chincilla which came to a sticky end at the hands of her brother. Theyre only ever tools or props at the end of the day. How do other soaps portray pets? There's the odd dog here and there Well'ard and Tyrone's mutt, but hardly any cats or rabbits.
