Can anybody tell me how to find out what type of hard drive will work on my pc as a second drive. I have (for my sins) a dell dimension 2400.

You should as long as this is a standard purchase model be able to add a new IDE/EIDE drive as can be bought in most pc shops, the models offered as an upgrade route by dell are the Hitachi Deskstar 180GXP models in various sizes. The drives should be of type PATA and not the newer SATA standard. This information was found on dell support website.
