School Trips Have Changed ...

Boy #1 is off to Liverpool this week for two days. They are going to the new cathedral, a museum/art gallery, open-topped bus your, boat trip on the Mersey (not a yellow duckmarine thankfully), ten-pin bowling and an evening meal at the Red Hot Buffet. We never did anything that interesting. What are your memories of school trips?

We sat up "in the Gods" so we got the best effect of the Hall's famous echo; a feature of those days, since removed; so we got two concerts for the price of one. I must have thought it was very grand, because I bought a new suit for the occasion. And that was it, for outings
Day trips to France, getting pissed on the ferry, stuffing the foil from our packed lunches up the payout slot on the fruit machines on the ferry and then waiting for someone to play them and walk away thinking the machine was empty.

The only school trip I remember was a day out on the Dart Valley Railway. There was the odd skiing trip but my Mum said she resented subsidising a free holiday for the teacher. I don`t remember wanting to go anyway - I didn`t like the idea of being on a package deal (I still don`t). I remember my best mate went on the school geology trip and the two teachers were having an affair and were holed up in their tent every night - it was the talk of the school when they came back.
