I cant believe any American can seriously ask this.

The USA would be a lot lot smaller if it had not bought the land in the Louisiana Purchase.

It was about 828,000 square miles, about a fifth of the current size of the USA.

Ummm... good link from mosaic, but I've noticed that anytime anyone, but especially an American (such as myself) comes on to this site with questions that are obviously 'homework', the submitter is instantly criticized for doing so. Although my initial reaction is to be in that camp, isn't the usefulness of this site, carried to its logical conclusion, inclusive of such questions.

Isn't almost every question that is posted on AB, even the 'brick-a-brack' in Chatterbank, can be resolved by Google, Bing or other websites designed especially for that purpose, no? So if our only response is "Go to Google" then this site qould soon dry up... just a tumbleweed blowing across Main Street in Tombstone, Arizona on a hot summer day, propelled by the Santa Ana wind emanating from the Sonoran Desert, causing a feeling of lonelyness and semi-despair known only by the gecko dwelling under the weathered boardwalk on which no one walks... (etc., etc.).

Clannad makes a good point I think. I think I'm guilty of pointing these posters in the right direction rather than giving the answer.

I think people are more inclined to help if the question is written a s a reasonably polite request for information and the questioner has taken some trouble to explain the context of the question (GCSE paragraph needed or Masters level thesis) rather than just pasting the question.

Having said that, it could be argued that that is considered acceptable in Crosswords just to post the clue and details of the letter count.

With homework questions I think it's better to point them in the right direction so they can use the resources they are expected to use.

But I can see the same also applies to requests to solve anagrams (should we just say'use the universal anagram solver' ) or TV ad themes (should we just say "learn how to use the TV ads site").
