The perceived necessity for such a law says much about the way in which we have allowed so-called political correctness to rule us. Free speech is only free speech if the law deems it to be free speech – and by giving it to one, we take it from another – and then upon objection from the loser, change our minds and decide that he must also be afforded the right to freedom of speech. Potty! We are climbing up our own bottoms!
I didn't have a problem with what is proposed, silly as it may be until it mentioned protection for teachers. Teachers should be presenting fact and encouraging discussion but NOT presenting their own opinions on this or any other matter.
Well, that shows how much she knows. Criticising or objecting to gay marriage doesn't breach the Public Order Act now. If the words amount to threats or harassment the fact that their subject is gay marriage or a homosexual couple is irrelevant, that would constitute an offence anyway
It seems a slightly odd proposal for this legal amendment to me. Objectors to gay marriage are already perfectly at liberty to say so, without fear of legal action - unless of course by their comments they are inciting violence etc....

I wonder if it is supposed to protect people like registrars in registry offices who do not wish to perform a gay marriage ceremony because it goes against their beliefs? Or perhaps to protect against dismissal for making anti-gay marriage comments, as seemingly happened in this recent case?

But again, no additional legal protections are required - the current legislation was more than adequate in this case too...

Sounds like lawyers creating work for ....lawyers.
so if i didn't agree with same sex marriage that would make me a bigot, strange.
It would make you a bigot to some,em, but that would mean that anyone who believed in a logical, factual, basis, for any religion would be a bigot. There is none; there is only belief and the innate human desire to have belief. It's a bit much to condemn much of the human race with one word.
