Shin Trauma...

Hi everyone.

My daughter was doing Barrel racing on Sunday and unfortunately she hit her shin very hard going around the last barrel. The skin wasn't broken but there is what looks like a blood blister under the skin about an inch diameter where the impact was. Once at home we put ice on it and elevated it for the rest of the day. There is now a nice big bruise, slight swelling and a dent where the blood under the skin is.

She is still complaining that it really hurts. I have rang the doctor but can't get an appointment today. Not sure whether to take her to the walk in at the hospital or leave it a few more days.

I know shin injuries can be painful as there is not much cushioning and a lot of nerves but I would hope on Day 3 the pain would get better.

I don't know how old your daughter is, but i cannot see that the doctor or any "walk in clinic" can do more than you have done.
It is probably a subperiosteal haematoma (bruise on the bone) and will certainly take weeks rather than days to completely heal.

I see your point Sqad. I guess I'm thinking if it's that painful maybe she has chipped the shin bone. She will be thirteen in July.

OK...bloody thick bone to chip ;-)

Ibuprofen 200mgms may be the answer.

I guess it is sqad...Can't help being an overprotected Mum :0)

She did hit it very hard, galloped straight in to it....! The horse galloped, not her!

Will get her to take some Ibruprofen, she's just had paracetamol up until now.
