Hi, I have always used avast! free antivirus , having installed W7/64 I now have Microsoft Security Essentials as well. I have been told that having 2 antivirus programs on my PC will slow it down and is unnecessary. Comments from the boffins please.

I'm not a boffin , by any stretch of the immagination .

However having two antivirus on your machine , can conflict with each other .
There's a serious risk of system conflicts (leading to your computer crashing) if you have two anti-vrus programs running in the background simultaneously.

However installing a new anti-virus program often automatically disables an existing one anyway.
I'm no boffin either, but MSE & Malwarebytes should be enough to protect your machine, IMO.

Be sure to click the left-hand "Free" download & at the end of the installation, take care to untick the box that says "Enable free trial of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO".

Update & run this once a week - along with MSE (also regularly updated), you should be covered.

Thanks for replies, Buenchico , I think both are running as when I click onto MSE at times it tells me I need to update and run a scan. Avast self updates. Should I remove MSE or is there a way of 'suspending it' without removing it ?
Just uninstall the one you do not want in Add/Remove programs. Re-boot your pc and make sure the one your left with is up and running.
Meant to add, you can always reinstall the one you deleted if you fancy a change.
