Do you have to change your paper licence for a photocard one? I need to change the address on mine (it's at least 16 years out of date) and we have moved five times since the last change of address.

I think the minute you make any changes to a driving licence then you automatically have to have the photocard with the paper one.
Inform the DVLA of your change of address, and they will tell you if you need a photocard one or not.
I'm unsure an out of date one is legal is it ?

It's my belief that if you have to renew then you have to have the latest design, and that means paying for one of those photo ones that need regular paying for, er I mean renewing regardless.

One good reason for not changing address.
i thought it was £1,000 fine if you dont inform the dvla of any relevant changes..
When I moved house I had to change my paper one for a photo card. Because it was a change of address it was free apart from the cost of the photo and quite simple....x

It says something about providing the last three years worth of addresses - do I pretend that I have just moved or provide this address (where I have lived for nearly three years)?
Hang on, can paper ones go out of date? or do you mean the address is from 16 years ago?
Question Author
Mrs M - it is £1000 so I haven't driven since Christmas when I found out/remembered about the fine.
DVLA dont do just paper licences, you have to have the photocard too. When I renewed mine recently they were able to use the same photo on my passport, which saved a bit of bother. Its easy to do on line too

RR - yes, the address is from somewhere we lived 16 years ago (but at least it doesn't have my maiden name still on it, which I thought it might).
Sherr....I moved two years ago. I only got around to changing things a few weeks ago. I had no problem and didn't have to give proof of any previous address...I suppose my last one was on the paper licence. I may have had to include a utility bill...I can't remember but it was simple.
I guess I will have to pay to replace the one I had had for the few weeks until it was stolen....:-(
hi sherrard, you still have to inform the dvla of any changes even if you havent driven, you are the holder of the licence and its up to you to keep it up to date, i dont wish to alarm you,my friend was in the same position as you,she just changed it over tho,no questions asked..im sure you will be fine when you update it..

Right, I've done it online and there were no tricky questions about the addresses (wondered if they could tell that I hadn't lived at the address on the licence for 16 years). However, I didn't have to pay anything so I am unsure if it has worked.
Yes as gness says, when I changed an address (with a few missing) on my old paper licence a new photocard one came at no charge (and with the old points removed). I'm sure it has worked Sherr.
